Turning madness into sadness
by Alicia Zamora
The artist born Kim Hyeon Jun, otherwise known as Tabber, is a South Korean alternative rapper and singer who debuted under the company You.will.knovv. Debuting his album ‘Deep End Mixtape’ in 2020 he continued with releasing ‘Electric Animal featuring Keyon Christ’ in 2021. He started gaining more recognition for his talented and unique voice after appearing on the famous show ‘Show Me the Money’ for its tenth season.
Moving on after his appearance on Show Me the Money he continued with releasing “007 featuring Syd’ in 2022 and this year he came out with two singles the first being ‘Want You’ and ‘Creepin’ (ft. Paul Blanco and Miso)’.
Tabber is different from your regular everyday rapper. His music has a different sense to it. It's an alternative vibe mixed with a robotic sound. He doesn’t stick to normal rapping that’s typical nowadays of new and upcoming artists. He uses a lot of singing in his music as well and his voice is certainly unique with a deep mix with an angelic hint to it.
He then announced a full album coming on October 25th. Tabber’s new album, “ Madness Always Turns to Sadness”, consists of seven new tracks. With this, he shows that his duplexity is truly one of a kind. His rapping style and singing ability suck people into listening and streaming his music.
DIVING INTO THE ALBUM
With that being said let's start off with track 1, ‘‘Healing Killin” which starts off with a purge kind of beat and a ‘oooo’ blending in the back. As it keeps playing the retro sound starts to come out more. One thing about Tabber is that his music stands out. His melodies and deep voice transcend you into a whole different world. The way he raps in Korean and then slowly transitions to singing in English just makes sense.
Moving on to track two, ‘‘Baby Doll” brings more of a party retro sound to it. The melody starts off with a bit of a bang blending it with his vocals. It gives a sort of a boy band sound. It sounded like something new compared to his old music. It's the type of song you can turn on and bop your head to. When he keeps it up with “Like that” or “ Are you gon’ fight back?” it just ties the song together because it's catchy and it's bound to stick with you.
‘‘Shut the fuck up, that's mine”, is the third track on his EP and is a personal favorite. Right off the bat the melody just catches your full attention. This song in general has a nostalgic feel to it. I see a pattern of catchiness. The harmonizing with the melody is like no other.
Track four “Creepin’ (ft. Paul Blanco and Miso)” was released earlier in the year. The track starts with what sounds like a little circus adventure blending into the piano. When it starts it sounds unique. It sounds as if he’s running and losing his breath while still staying on beat. As the piano keeps coming the trumpet sound is introduced and when he says “I got blue pills for them” his voice nicely blends in with the melodies. Near the end, all their vocals blend beautifully together. Miso ending it off with her angelic voice brings it all together. This track is where you get to hear more of his singing.
Track five “Being (feat. Baek Yerin)” has more of an instrumental mood. In the melody, you can hear more instrumental sounds than in the previous tracks. It starts off with a tropical type of sound with both their voices harmonizing. In this track, you can tell how perfectly both their voices match each other.
Track six, “I Want You” was also released before this but with this one, you can tell he switched it up from the previous release of. This time it's slowed down and the beat is at a slower pace mixed in with more of an upbeat funk.
Ending it off with track seven, “Invisible Man (feat. Hanjoo Kim)”. This one starts more with a slow intro and then comes in strong with a retro Roboto vibe. You can hear how he explores different sounds and machines for this song. It gives off an extraordinary put to it. He doesn’t sing or say much in it but it's still powerful. The melody itself is very breathtaking. Getting near to half the song he starts smoothing it off with his singing and it pulls the whole album together. The album itself showed how Tabber as an artist isn’t afraid to explore new genres.
THE CONCLUSION
Overall, this album was very anticipated and exactly what the fans were waiting for. Tabber never disappoints when it comes to any of his releases. His music is authentic and one of a kind. It exceeds everyone's expectations every single time he releases an album, single, or EP. He simply has a unique talent to him and his voice is truly one of a kind. He knows how to construct amazing music with both his deep vocal tones mixed in with his low singing voice.
